CGL Program – “The Essentials of Leadership – Why Would Anyone Follow You?”
This interactive workshop is based on two premises: 1) there are many different ways of exerting leadership; and 2) followers choose to follow leaders (or not).
The session will help participants:
- Become more self-reflective and understand their life stories and the “leadership gifts” that they are compelled to give away
- Explore the indispensable competencies of 21st century leaders, including the importance of soft skills
- Develop a “leadership presence”
- Engage in authentic conversations and engender trust with others
Speakers: Dr. Frank Benest, former City Manager of Palo Alto, and ICMA Liaison for Next Generation Initiatives and Dominic Lazzaretto, City Manager of Arcadia, and Co-Chair Cal-ICMA Talent Initiative
Afternoon Session: "Be Relentless in Achieving Greatness"Changing culture can be a challenge. How do you change culture without destroying morale? You will learn in this exciting and informational session. In addition, you will learn how to see "waste", set a precedent, and establish reasonable expectations that will lead to success. Director of Public Works, Dirk Epperson, will give you the tools to lead through difficult situations and encourage employees to achieve greatness.
Speaker: Dirk Epperson, Director of Public Works, City of El Cajon
Afternoon Session: “Tools to Get Your Budget Right”For some, it is the dreaded “B” word – budgeting. Many staff members view a budget as a straitjacket that will keep them from doing what they want but that couldn’t be further from the truth! A budget doesn’t limit freedom, it gives you freedom! Getting your budget right is simply spending the organizations money intentionally. In this interactive session, learn the budgeting tips through: Engagement, Education and Empowerment.
Speaker: David Cain, Retired Director of Finance, Professor at California State University Northridge and California State University Long Beach.
